A Simple Introduction to Microdermabrasion
By Andrew Kelly
Microdermabrasion is a skin re-surfacing treatment that exfoliates having a spectacular effect upon Acne and superficial scarring, wrinkles, stretch marks, sun damage and other common skin care problems. Microdermabrasion developed from the, already established, treatment known as dermabrasion. Dermabrasion was harsh and uncomfortable but microdermabrasion is much gentler on the skin. The initial results were very good but the real benefits were after several sessions and the procedure was soon popular with dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons.
Microdermabrasion is becoming more popular in skin care salons as the public's awareness is increased by the hollywood stars who have benefited from it. (maybe the Celebs feel more comfortable admitting to a non-surgical treatment). Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure without the use of scalpels or lasers and is so gentle that the skin is hardly flushed after a half hour session (making it perfect for a lunch time treatment).
Microdermabrasion has been referred to as the "sandblasting of the face" I don't know about you but that doesn't really fill me with confidence. While an analogy may be drawn the experience is nothing like it. Microdermabrasion polishes and exfoliates (removal of dead skin cells) the skin with the use of a machine which gently circulates tiny crystals across the surface. The crystals are usually made of zinc or aluminum oxide.
As the microdermabrasion machine's fine jets work across the face it uppermost layer (stratum cornea) is gently abrased and the fine dust, of dead skin cells, is sucked back up. Because only dead skin is removed the procedure is painless so there is no need for an anesthetic or even painkillers! Furthermore the removal of the old skin cells invigorates the skin and encourages growth.
After only one session your skin will look radiant, glowing and much smoother. There may even be a small reduction of small lines. If you had any blocked pores these should now be clear allowing your skin to breathe properly. After only a couple of sessions you will begin to notice a vast difference, the effects will begin to last longer and you will now see a vast improvement with small lines gone and many small wrinkles gone too. The pigmentation of the skin should also appear more uniform with any minor irregularities removed.
Before you start microdermabrasion the consultant will make an assessment of your skin and suggest the number of treatment that would be required to make your skin perfect. After the initial course you will only need a few top-up treatments here and there.
Many have hailed microdermabrasion as the miracle cure for Acne. Yes it can remove many of the scars left by Acne. It can clear out clogged pores and remove all the excess sebum (oil). It will invigorate the skin making it far healthier looking. However it is very important that microdermabrasion is never used on skin that has an active outbreak of acne. A well trained professional may be able to work around your acne but you should NEVER use a home microdermabrasion kit while you have an outbreak. Sadly micro-dermabrasion can not remove deep scars but it can reduce them greatly so that they are no longer as visible as they once were. Even better is the fact that microdermabrasion has been proven to stop acne from coming back! Yes, it will help bring it under total control but only if a maintenance course is adhered to.
There are a few disadvantages, as mentioned above it can not completely remove deep acne scars and it can not remove deep wrinkles. While it can even out minor discoloration it can not remove deep discoloration. However it can help reduce the visibility of both deep wrinkles, deep acne scarring and discoloration. Furthermore your salon consultant should provide you with an after-care treatment and this can include other anti-wrinkle remedies. You really can have the best of both worlds!
