Mouth Sores
By Wendy Simons

Some people who have bad breath may have mouth sores. These mouth sores are another type of mouth ulcer. They are also referred to by the name of canker sores. These are the most commonly occurring types of mouth ulcers.

The medical terms for mouth sores are recurrent minor aphthous ulcers and recurrent minor aphthous stomatitis. These names indicate the difference between mouth sores and aphthous ulcers or aphthous stomatitis.

While we know that mouth sores do occur and that sometimes these mouth sores can be painful, we still don’t know the exact reason for mouth sores to develop. There are different theories and a number of triggers that have been identified as possible causes for mouth sores. However these are still theories that have yet to be verified with medical data and proof.

The main theory as to a person getting mouth sores seems to involve the body’s immune system. In this theory when the body identifies a chemical molecule that is does not recognize, the lymphocytes which are a part of the white blood cells, decides to attack these molecules. Mouth sores develop after the lymphocytes have destroyed the intruder.

The various triggers that could cause mouth sores are numerous. Some of these include the types of mouthwashes and toothpastes that we use. Any oral hygiene products that contain the chemical substance sodium lauryl sulfate have the potential to develop mouth sores due to the drying effect these products have on the delicate mucous membrane tissues of the mouth.

There is also the idea that physical traumas like self inflicted bites, sharp tooth edges and food irritations can cause mouth sores to develop as well. Many people who have developed mouth sores claim that foods like crisps were the reasons behind their mouth sores. About 38% of mouth sore victims have felt these sores developed as a result of traumas.

The other possibilities for mouth sores developing are emotional and psychic stress. These factors have been proven to affect the health of individuals in various ways. Some mouth sore sufferers have stated that their periods of emotional of psychological stress coincided with the onset of developing mouth sores.

The other types of triggers include dietary deficiencies, allergies and sensitivities, hormonal changes in the body, genetics, infectious agents which are both bacterial and viral, medical conditions and medications.

As you can see there are various conditions that can cause an outbreak of mouth sores. Unfortunately we do not possess the full information regarding the cause of these mouth sores. Until we what causes mouth sores to develop you can talk with your doctor about how to relieve the pain of your mouth sores.
