Stomach Ulcers

I am sure that many of you have heard of stomach ulcers. The question that needs to be asked is how many of you understand and know what a stomach ulcer is? There are a few other names that stomach ulcers are called by. These include peptic ulcers and gastric ulcers.
Stomach ulcers are caused by the gastrointestinal tract being eroded by acidic stomach digestive juices. This erosion causes a small hole to develop in the walls of the stomach. Sometimes these stomach ulcers are painful. While stomach ulcers are not considered as being contagious or even cancerous, there is a possibility that the ulcer can become malignant.
Did you know that stomach ulcers are a very common disease among many Americans? More than a million people in America itself are affected by stomach ulcers. The size of this stomach problem is about 1/8 of an inch to ¾ of an inch in diameter.
Now while having a stomach ulcer can be a problem due to the pain that you may experience, the ulcer itself may be the indications of another disease or medical condition. Generally stomach ulcers are common in mastocytosis. The bleeding from a stomach ulcer can cause iron deficiency anemia.
There are some symptoms of stomach ulcers that you can use to identify if you are suffering from stomach ulcers. These can include a burning or a gnawing feeling in your stomach area. This sensation can last for about 30 minutes to about 3 hours. Many people have though that this pain is heartburn, indigestion or even hunger pangs.
You will notice that this pain occurs in the upper abdomen area and just below the breastbone. For some sufferers of stomach ulcers their ulcer pains happen just after they have eaten their meals. For other they will suffer from these pains hours after eating food. Stomach ulcer pains can waken the sufferers from a good night’s sleep.
Another symptom of stomach ulcers are the weeks of ulcer pain which are then followed by many weeks of not being subject to ulcer pains. Some people advocate that stomach ulcers can be alleviated by drinking milk, eating, resting and also taking antacids.
When you have stomach ulcers there is a chance that you will experience weight loss in addition to appetite loss. Recurring vomiting, blood in the stools and anemia are also other types of symptoms that you will experience during stomach ulcers.
For any person who knows that they are suffering from stomach ulcers talking with their doctor can provide them with medications that may help to reduce to cure their stomach ulcer pains. In addition they may be given advice and stomach ulcer diet plans that can help them. With the help of this knowledge suffering from stomach ulcers may become a thing of the past.
